The Rise of Poo-Pourri and search for an organic poop spray
We get questions all the time about Organic Poop Spray. It’s funny because not so long ago this whole poo spray trend started with a little viral video.
This hilarious video got passed around the social media sphere. It featured a glamorous bombshell sitting on a toilet and announcing that her friends believe she doesn’t poop. The claim seemed way too good to be true. That’s what made the poo-pourri spray commercial so very popular:
What the world discovered was that it wasn’t too good to be true at all. It was that good and entirely true at the same time. With a few spritzes of your favorite poop smell spray, you can offload the nastiest after-effects of a big greasy burger and fries, and your bathroom will smell like roses. If you tried it, you were hooked for good. After all, who wants to go back to smelling crap when they’ve gotten used to smelling citrus and lemongrass?
The quest for a cheaper poo spray
The only problem with name brand poo sprays is the price. While no one denies the fact that they’re worth every penny, it would still be nice to be able to save a little bit of money on it. It turns out that you can make your poo spray DIY with just some essential oils, a spray bottle, and water. It’s easy!
Natural and organic poo spray
Name brand toilet poo sprays are made from essential oils, and they are all natural. But is a natural poop spray the same as an Organic Poop Spray? Whether they are organic depends on the essential oils they are using; Some companies advertise natural, other advertise organic and don’t say either one.
It’s pretty much impossible to tell if a poop smell spray is organic, unless they advertise it because they don’t advertise what brand of essential oils they are using. That would be giving away their entire trade secret, and no company in their right mind is going to do that.
But you can make sure that your poop be gone spray is 100% natural and organic by buying your own essential oils and mixing your own poo spray. Just buy organic essential oils from a reputable company and you’ll never have to worry about whether you’re defiling your toilet with unclean things … at least until you sit down.
A note of caution on essential oils
When you’re shopping for essential oils, you will find that you can get dirt cheap essential oils, and then you can get the same oil for a much steeper price. Resist the urge to grab the bargain. You may be wondering which company of essentials oils to buy then? There are many great companies, but just remember that cheap essential oils are usually diluted with a carrier oil to make the price lower. Also, cheap essential oils may be extracted using harsh chemical solvents instead of the more complicated and lengthy steam or CO2 processes.
You don’t necessarily have to buy the most expensive oils you can find, but do make sure you’re buying from a reputable company, that you are getting pure essential oils, and that you’re paying enough to get the high-quality oils you’re looking for.
But won’t that defeat the purpose of saving money?
Not at all. It only takes a few drops of essential oil to make a whole bottle of no smell poop spray. Your bottles of essential oils will last through many refills of your poop smell spray, and will pay for themselves over and over again when you compare them to the cost of the brand name poo sprays.
Enough of that, give me the recipe!
Poo Pourri No. 2 spray is advertised as smelling of Bergamot, Lemongrass, and Grapefruit. It’s a heady, sweetly floral, fresh citrus scent that makes your bathroom smell both clean and delicious.
The thing about essential oil blends is that once you know what it’s supposed to smell like, you can do a pretty good job of figuring out what oils to use in what proportions to create a blend that smells the same. So here is the DIY version of No. 2 spray that you can make yourself, at home, from all natural, organic essential oils:
- 20 drops Bergamot essential oil
- 20 drops Lemongrass essential oil
- 20 drops Grapefruit essential oil
Mix all essential oils in a spray bottle and fill the bottle up with water. Give it a good shake to mix it thoroughly. Then, when you go to use it, simply shake it up again, spray it in your toilet bowl, and do your business as normal. If you want to be extra considerate, spray again after you flush so the next person will reap the benefit as well.
But does it really work?
The poo spray commercial makes it seem like there won’t be even a hint of poop smell when you make a stinky. This isn’t quite true. If you pay attention really carefully, you’ll catch a tiny, brief whiff of malodorous raunch before the poo gets trapped under the blessed layer of essential oils. After all, the poo had to fall through the air for a few inches before it could plop into the water.
Does it work in other places (like porta-potties)?
The whole assumption of poo odor spray is that you’re using it with a flushing toilet. Oil floats on the water, so the essential oils trap everything stinky underneath the water, and above the water, there is just the smell of flowers, citrus, and whatever other essential oils you chose to use.
Porta-potties don’t flush, so obviously you wouldn’t be able to hide the business you were doing while you were doing it. That said, we don’t see why it wouldn’t work to spray some poop away spray in a porta-potty to help trap at least some of the terrible odors underneath. Those places could use all the help they can get, and at any rate, it couldn’t make it any worse. Of course, we haven’t tried Extreme Poo Pourri Spraying, so we have no empirical evidence to back up this assumption.
In less extreme circumstances, the answer is obvious: yes, it works in all sorts of other places. It’s just essential oils and water, mixed in a spray. You can use it as a room spray or an air freshener. You can spritz it on clothes to make them smell nice. You can put some on a handkerchief and put it in your underwear drawer. As a bonus, essential oils are antibacterial and antimicrobial, which means that when you spray it on fabric or carpet it will kill the germs that cause nasty odors, and you will have long-lasting freshness.
